Boldt Castle

The Boldt Castle on Heart Island in the Alexandria Bay area of upstate New York was the site for one of our impromptu tours in conjunction with the 34th annual World Brotherhood Camporee this year.  We strongly encourage you to learn about the history of the remarkable couple behind this amazing private residence and the fascinating tale about the buildings themselves, which now spans more than a century. But for now, enjoy a sampling of pictures from our tour.

We began our tour at the Boldt Yacht House on Wellesley Island, which provided shelter for Mr. Boldt’s collection of sailing and power boats, even facilitating storage of his sailing yacht without removing the 60-foot tall main mast.

Now on our way from the Yacht House to Heart Island we can see the castle (center) and the power house (extreme left) while Saint Lawrence River scenic tour vessels embark passengers at the main dock.

Inside the castle, one of the first impressions is of the beautiful main foyer and staircase with its rich marble floors and steps, the fine woodwork, and the fireplaces that provided heat to the residence.

From one of the balconies, we see the view of the river and examples of the heart motif that Boldt carefully repeated throughout the castle.  Can you find one?

Back inside the castle, the attention to detail in the construction is amazing.  Unfortunately, not all of the castle was ever completed.  You’ll want to learn more of the story to understand why....  (Photo credit:  Greg Wood)

Here’s another example of the elegant decor inside those parts of the castle that were completed. (Photo credit: Greg Wood)

Topping off the foyer that we showed earlier, note the massive stained-glass dome that adorned this magnificent centerpiece of the castle.  (Photo credit:  Greg Wood)

And what would any residence be without its own source of electricity - even in the late 1800s? Well, here’s where Mr. Boldt produced his own power - in this stately power house.

These pictures are only a fraction of the impressive sights on this tour.  We spent only a couple of hours here, but one could easily spend the entire day investigating the different buildings and details of the many features.  The tour is well worth the investment in time and money, so check it out!
